Ah but you can give odds forever

I love these sorts of big dance numbers. They're so exciting! It's pretty incredible to think of all the talent that was just hanging around the studios back then. I mean, there were all of these amazing dancers - and they weren't even the stars!

I'm afraid of nothing, least of all you.

As if I need an excuse to post a photo of Errol and Olivia. I don't.

"One of us? He looks like three of us."

Last week's quote, "When you do something wrong, you must do something right, and I'm doing all right tonight" is from The Merry Widow and it's sung by Maurice Chevalier. The name of the song is, "Girls, Girls, Girls."

Now, for this week's quote: "One of us? He looks like three of us."

When we rode on the merry-go-round, I kissed Louisa.

This is one of my favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite musicals. I love it!! The only difficulty is that it's a little difficult to sing out of context. I mean, I can sing, "I'm singin' in the rain" and people might look at me funny because I'm singing out loud. But if I start singing, "How I love a glass of beer..." they might look at me funny for other reasons. Anyway, here it is:

I can see you boys don't appreciate high art.

One of my favorite Fred scenes ever.

"When you do something wrong, you must do something right, and I'm doing all right tonight!"

Last week's quote: "Not a pretty face, I grant you. But underneath its flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character" was from An American in Paris.

Now, for this week's quote: "When you do something wrong, you must do something right, and I'm doing all right tonight!"

It's been 24 for a long time.

I really did not like Once Upon A Honeymoon. I get mad when I think a movie is going to be a comedy and it turns out to be a drama. I feel cheated. Particularly when there is so much promise. Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers are so great together. The fact that they had chemistry on and off the screen makes their onscreen chemistry all the more exciting. Can you imagine them being paired in a comedy among Ginger's other great comedies like Vivacious Lady and Bachelor Mother? It was the same that Cary was off being amazing in his own comedies like The Awful Truth and Bringing Up Baby. A late 30's comedy with Ginger and Cary would have been fantastic. Ah well. At least I can have this scene. It leaves me in stitches every time.

I'm not exactly repulsive.

I love this photo of Vera Ellen. She looks so angelic and glamorous.

"Not a pretty face, I grant you. But underneath its flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character."

Last week's quote: "If Josephine had left Napoleon and climbed in my lap, I'd say go back to Nap. I'd ______." was from Follow the Fleet. The blank to be filled in is, "I'd rather lead a band," which is also the name of the song! The song was written by Irving Berlin and performed by Fred Astaire in the film.

This week's quote: "Not a pretty face, I grant you. But underneath its flabby exterior is an enormous lack of character."

Give him his breakfast.

One of my favorite things about Fred and Ginger movies - besides the dancing and the music and the costumes is the dialogue. Their scenes are so much fun! Of course there's very little plot to them, but that doesn't take away from the witty banter. Their chemistry is reflected in their non-dancing scenes as much as in their dancing ones. Here's the tricky part: finding such scenes on YouTube. I finally found one and it happens to be one that I love!

'S awful nice

I reserve the right to change my mind at any given time. I use such privilege now. In a previous post, I wrote that I didn't like An American in Paris. Well, I was at the store the other day and saw the movie on sale for $5. I couldn't resist the price because it's a classic and it's Gene Kelly and even if I don't adore the film, it's only $5 and I can at least just watch the songs. Anyway, that was my thought process. So, I bought the movie. And then I decided to give it a second chance. After all, it had been a good while since I'd seen it all the way through. My sister had been surprised that I didn't like it in the first place. I've always been sad for the Milo and Henri because they get left out of the equation.

Anyway, I rewatched the movie and found that I liked it a good deal. Yay! I'm not feeling quite as sorry for Milo anymore because she really did know pretty early on that Jerry wasn't interested. Henri, however, I still really feel badly for. He's such a great guy. Not only is he attractive (I mean, serously, Lise, if you don't want him, I'll take him!) but he's so sweet the whole time. But, after watching the movie, I've come to grips with the situation. You get a good sense that he gave Lise up; she didn't leave him - which makes it easier, somehow. And, anyway, I like to think that he goes off to America on that big tour and finds himself an American girl who's absolutely crazy for beautiful French men.

In any case, this is a picture I've always loved and now that I like the movie, I like the picture even more now!

I found the picture here.

It's National Crime Prevention Week. Take a burglar to dinner.

What can I say about How To Steal A Million that hasn't already been said?

Well, frankly, nothing. I loved it and there seems to be few ways to praise something with originality.

I have to admit that I avoided it for a while. I sometimes avoid movies that I want to like but am afraid I won't like (Sullivan's Travels, Meet John Doe, Dinner at Eight). I would read reviews of the film and think, I'd probably really like this, and then I'd watch the trailer and think, oh maybe not. And then I would shuffle it down the queue. Anyway, I finally decided to be bold and try it.

I think I've been starving myself for a treat. Because it was a-mazing!! Such a brilliant movie! It's so happy, so funny, so charming, so beautiful, so romantic. So great! Again, I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said by other bloggers: I love Audrey Hepburn, I love Peter O'Toole, I love the costumes, I love the dialogue, I love the location. I just loved it.

And now I have to buy it. Well, okay, not now per se as I'm trying to save up, but now I want to buy it.

"If Josephine had left Napoleon and climbed in my lap, I'd say go back to Nap."

So, last week's quote, "Oh, Maurice, I'm, like, so happy for you!" was from Paris When It Sizzles. It's quite possibly my favorite scene in the whole movie. Okay, well, maybe one of my favorite scenes. There are several.

Now for this week's quote, which includes a fill in the blank!

"If Josephine had left Napoleon and climbed in my lap, I'd say go back to Nap. I'd ______."

She certainly can

Happy Birthday Marilyn!!

I'm embedding one of my favorite songs of hers. It's such a cute and sexy song!

By the way, in case you haven't heard yet, Debbie Reynolds is holding this crazy big auction for all of the movie memorabilia she's collected over the years. This outfit is in it. It makes me kind of sad that she couldn't put it into a museum. In any case though, I'm glad she was able to preserve these wonders.
